얼마 전 한국에서 집중호우로 인해 5 명이 사망하는등 많은 피해가 있었습니다. 집중호우는 갑자기 짧은 시간에 많은 비가 내리기 때문에 인명 피해도 크고 재산 손실도 많습니다. 200 년만에 오는 집중호우라는, 5 년 만에 다시 왔다고 합니다.

이상기후는 한국만 국한된 것이 아닙니다. 몬트리올도 지난 수요일에 비가 많이 와서 도로가 막히는등 피해가 있었습니다. 홍수도 잦은데, 2017년 제가 몬트리올에 온 후 100 년만에 온다는 홍수가 벌써 두 번 왔습니다.

이런 이상기후는 세계적인 현상입니다. 비 뿐 아니라 태풍이나 허리케인이 더욱 강해지고 더 자주 옵니다. 여름에는 기온이 높아지고, 겨울에는 더욱 추워지고 있습니다. 이산화탄소 배출이 주요 원인이라는 것을 알고 있지만, 아직 노력이 부족한 상태입니다.

지난 주 휴스턴 서울교회에서 가정교회 평신도 컨퍼런스가 있었습니다. 평소에 수고하는 목자/목녀님들을 위해 안락한 쉐라톤 호텔에서 열려 왔는데, 이번에는 허리케인의 영향으로 호텔이 정전이 되어서 교회에서 열렸다고 합니다. 고급 호텔의 안락한 침대 대신, 교회 체육관에서 슬리핑 백을 펴고 잠을 잤다고 합니다.

호텔에 전기가 돌아오도록 기도했지만, 우리가 기도한 대로 응답해주지 않으셨습니다. 그래도 어떻게 해서든지 컨퍼런스를 하고 있습니다. 모든 분들이 불편할텐데, 이런 환경을 통해 어떤 은혜를 주실지 기대가 됩니다.

이런 일련의 사태를 통해, 인간의 나약함을 다시 한 번 생각하게 됩니다. 8000 미터가 넘는 히말리야 봉우리를 모두 완등한 어떤 산악인에게 히말리야를 ‘정복’한 소감을 물으니까, 자연은 정복하는 존재가 아니라며 자연이 등반을 ‘허락’한 것이라고 말한 것이 기억납니다.

인간은 자연을 정복했다는 말을 하지만, 지구의 재채기 정도인 태풍이 지나가면 속수무책으로 당합니다. 지구의 트름정도인 지진이 나면 수 천 명이 목숨을 잃습니다. 몇 년동안 지구를 강타한 코비드도 따지고 보면 지구의 저항이었습니다.

이렇게 인간이 나약한데도, 자연을 창조하시고 주관하고 계시는 하나님을 너무 무시합니다. 하나님의 존재를 부인할 뿐 아니라 하나님을 경멸하고 모욕하기까지 합니다. 그래도 하나님은 사랑으로 인내하고 계십니다.

그러나 언제까지 인내하실지 우리는 모릅니다. 인내가 끝나는 날 예수님께서 다시 오실 것입니다. 그때까지 예수님을 모르는 사람에게 예수님을 전하고, 겸손하게 하나님을 경외하면서 살면 좋겠습니다.

Recently, there was a lot of damage in Korea, including the deaths of five people due to torrential rains. Torrential rains are sudden and rainfalls are heavy in a short period of time, resulting in a large loss of life and property. It is said that the torrential rain that usually come once in 200 years came again in 5 years.

The abnormal climate is not limited to Korea. Montreal also suffered heavy rain on Wednesday, causing damage such as road blockages. Floods are frequent too. Since I came to Montreal in 2017, there have already been two floods of 100 years.

This kind of abnormal weather is a global phenomenon. In addition to rain, typhoons and hurricanes become stronger and more frequent. Temperatures are rising in the summer and colder in the winter. We know that carbon dioxide emissions are a major contributor, but there is still a lack of effort.

Last week there was a house church lay conference at Seoul Church in Houston. It has been held at the Sheraton Hotel, which is comfortable for MokJa and MokNyo who usually work hard, but this time it was held at the church because the hotel lost power due to the impact of the hurricane. Instead of the comfortable bed of a luxury hotel, they had to sleep in a church gym in sleeping bags.

We prayed for the power to return to the hotel, but He didn't answer our prayers. Still, they are doing conferences anyway. Everyone will be uncomfortable, but I can't wait to see what kind of grace God will give us through this kind of environment.

This series of events reminds us of human frailty. I remember when a reporter asked a mountaineer who had climbed all the Himalayan peaks over 8,000 meters how he felt about "conquering" the Himalayas. He said that nature was not to conquer and that nature had "allowed" him to climb.

Humans say that they have conquered nature, but when a typhoon, a sneeze on the earth, passes, they are helpless. Earthquakes, the earth's burp, kill thousands of people. The Covid pandemic that hit the Earth for several years was indeed a global resistance.

In spite of this weakness, we ignore God, who created and controls nature. Not only do they deny the existence of God, but they also despise and insult God. Still, God is loving and patient.

But we do not know how long he will endure. The day patience endures ends, Jesus will come again. Until then, I hope we can preach Jesus to those who do not know Him and live in humility and fear of God.
